Symbiotic Terrestrial Ecosystems

My latest lichen painting is on a beautifully patterned birch wood round. The background is the natural light beige of the wood, and the alternating wavy layers are comprised of intricately painted lichens. These patterned channels create the impression of different layers or continents.

This painting was built slowly with semi-transparent layers of acrylic paint, and then further glazed for added dimension and depth. Colors range from muted greens and blues to oranges, yellows, and reds in a variety of tones with much diversity in shades and hues. 

The overall effect is of a complex, microcosm-like landscape
